the jobs report is in easing concern about obama's weak debate. nate silver said first day in while obama is is happy for everyone to talk about the economy because the numbers are better than expected with the unemployment rate dropping to 7.8%, a four-year low. exactly where it was when president obama took office. there was only a net gain of 114,000 jobs created last month. too low for sustained unemployment reduction. so something for both sides to like. the president has to be thrilled about this jobs numbers, though. it's a game changer unless it's not. the president is the out on the trail pushing it. >> as a nation we are moving forward again. we're moving forward. more people are getting jobs. now, every month reminds us that we've still got too many of our friends and neighbors looking for work. today's news certainly is not an excuse to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> my friends, whenever fall comes the leaves turn pretty colors and the jobs

presidential debate. for undecided voters style might matter over substance. how a candidate might say something may have more impact than what he says. what does mitt romney need to say to get an edge with some of the voters. he prepared john mccain four years and ago and also worked with mitt romney. brett welcome to the show. it's to have you here. [ applause ] what would you say mitt romney has to do more than anything else in order to go into that debate and come out the winner? >> at the top of the list has to be governor romney has to tie the poor economic conditions we find ourselves in right now to the failure of the president's policies. he has to be able to litigate and make the case that the policies the president has put forward have caused the economy to continue to go down. folks believe the economy is bad right now but what they don't actually believe is it is the president's fault. he has to make that case in the debate with the president standing on the stage with him that the president

if kerry is filling in for romney against this debate, you know, against obama in debate prep, is he preparing him for more than just substance? is he also preparing him for these stylistic what-ifs? these moments where obama could be pulled in one direction or the other and trying to sort of hedge against that? >> well, i think the biggest disadvantage obama has right now is practice. mitt romney's had a lot of debates. he went through a long primary practice where he got beat up a lot and got to beat up other people. barack obama had no primary process and has not been in a debate since his debates in the last election. so i think he's got -- he's not in fighting shape is my guess and all these practices he's doing, are to get him in the fighting shape. hopefully they have enough time to do it and hopefully he has a sparring opponent in john kerry who is not pulling any punches, not being as respectful to him as his staff might be and showing him that mitt romney is going to get on the stage knowing this is probably his last chance and he's going to be very aggressive in taking on
